What is a Rubber Dam

A rubber dam is such a dam in which a rubber bladder is used as a dam and spillway. The base of such dams are made of concrete. The rubber bladder is filled with air or water or a mixture of both. The rubber bladder is made up of ethylene propylene diene monomer. It is bulletproof and can have a life up to 100 years, experts claimed. The bladder can increase or decrease in size. A rubber dam is generally built on small rivers.

How Rubber Dam Works

Water that will come into the river during the monsoon will be stored in the dam. The water can be stored up to 3 meters in the case of the Gayaji dam. When the water is stored up to its limit, it can overflow downstream. In special cases, the dam can release water too. It is like a balloon in which air can be filled and sucked. The Gayaji is made rectangular.

If there is a shortage of water in the dam during the summer season, for this five bore wells have been made in the river to meet the shortage of 15-20 percent water in the dam.The steps are made meticulously in which there are 6 spans. The availability of water in the Gayaji dam will be throughout the year.

Why Rubber Dam in Gaya

The Gayaji dam is built with the goal to ease the religious rites that many people do after visiting Gaya. Gaya has also known as the land of Moksha where people come to pay homage to their ancestors. The religious custom is known as Pind Dan.

Vishnupad Mandir/ Temple, Gaya is known for Pind Dan and many people from across India come here to offer customs of Pind Dan, the sanctity of bathing, etc. In Hindu religious customs, there is a key importance of rivers and their water.

Falgu River is the nearest river to the Vishnupad Temple from which water needs can be fulfilled. But, Falgu river only offers water in Monsoons and remains dry in other seasons. To deal with this issue the Rubber Dam is built on the river so that the pilgrims can have water throughout the year and they can offer their religious rights anytime. Earlier, there used to be a pile of dirty water and garbage in the Falgu river. Now after the construction of the rubber dam, the Falgu river will become pollution free.
