The PM Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana has been conceived by keeping in mind the idea of development and support to the artisans and craftsmen so that they can contribute effectively to the nation. They will also be made a part of MSME (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises) Value Chain.

The traditional craftsmen of the country contributed immensely in the economic development of India before the invasion of the Britishers. The British Rule destroyed the ecosystem of Indian handicrafts, artisans and weavers present in the country at that time. After Independence the industry started gaining pace but a lot of people in the artisans and craftsmen community are still lagging behind. The PM VIKAS Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana is announced to support such craftsmen and artisans.
PM VIKAS Objectives
The Finance Minister of India while announcing the scheme has added that craftsmen and artisans works directly for the Atmnirbhar Bharat. This is the first time that such scheme to support them is presented. Following are the objectives of the scheme:
- To Up-skill the Artisans and Craftsmen.
- To Provide financial support to the traditional artisans and craftsmen if needed.
- Making them aware of the required technology that will benefit them in their work.
- Exposure of their goods to the wider market or an enlarged market reach.
- Put them in the value chain of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
- They will be trained in using latest technology.
- Enable them to maximise their productivity and profit.
- To make them self-reliant.
- Non-Interference in the original art.
Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana Beneficiary
The beneficiary of the PM VIKAS Yojana are artisans and craftsmen who are engaged in their traditional trade. They include:
- Carpenters,
- Goldsmiths,
- Sculptors,
- Blacksmiths and
- Potters
and any such persons engaged in traditional similar trade. The final call to decide on this is the competent authority appointed by the Government. The policy is made especially for the upliftment of often ignored sections of society such as women and poor people engaged in the similar trade.
“The artisans and handicrafts-men and people engaged in such pursuits represent the true spirit of Atmairbhar Bharat” said the Finance minister.

The PM VIKAS Yojana has been announced during the presentation of the General Budget 2023. The Government is yet to notify about the processes and methods to apply online for the scheme. It will be formulated soon. Applicants have to wait for sometime for complete rolling off of the scheme.
