Bihar Bridge Collapse

A bridge known as Khagaria-Bhagalpur bridge was collapsed recently in the state. It is suggested by the environmental experts that the bridge collapse will negatively affect the river biodiversity in the related area because of the large chink of concrete structure dissolving in river water and increases the risk of flooding.

Rivers such as Kosi, Kamla, Gandak, Balan, and Parman originate from the Himalayas and crosses various North Bihar districts including Khagaria. Khagaria is a flood prone region and face floods during the monsoon season. The non biodegradable part of the bridge structure may make the part of the underlying waterbody shallow and enhances the risk of flooding in the area.

The bridge was intended to connect Bhagalpur district to Khagaria district and it was being built over the river Ganges. As per media reports, It was expected to be finished by 2019 and the foundation stone was laid by CM Nitish Kumar in 2014. A Haryana based company was awarded the contract for this bridge. It was being built at around Rs.1700 Crores. It is also known by the name Aguwani-Sultanganj Ganga Bridge.
